“There is power in unity, and there is power in numbers,” said Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during his “Keep on Moving” speech given in May 1963 at St. Luke’s Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala.

When “Raise The Cybersecurity Curtain” — a compilation of quotes from 100 cybersecurity influencers across the globe — by Ludmila Morozova-Buss crossed our editors’ desk on LinkedIn early this morning — power in unity was the first thought that came to mind.

Cybercrime fighters run the gamut from cybersecurity experts to CISOs to product vendors and service providers with many of us — including journalists — in between. We are all over the map, literally and figuratively. In the course of fighting the good fight, our sound bites are picked up by media outlets and they flash across social media. All too often what each of us has to say is isolated to the medium in which it appeared.

Morozova-Buss, who describes herself as “a communication catalyst in the field of cybersecurity,” adeptly brought us all together by asking each person for a small contribution — just a quote. We were called to “be the voice” as she puts it.

The quotes are far from perfect. A few inadvertently border on promotion. But it’s not as much about what each person wrote as it is about everyone coming together.

One quote sums up the purpose for us. “Each of us walks our own road during our professional careers, sometimes this road is smooth and straight, but many times it’s full of accidents and traffic jams,” says Gary Hayslip, CISO at Softbank Investment Advisors, and one of Morozova-Buss’ hand-picked influencers. “What is vital to remember for all of us is we are members of a community, and even with the best career plan, it helps to have friends and peers to speak to and mentors to hold us accountable,” adds Hayslip.

What’s the intended result of sharing these quotes? Anna Abkowicz, Ph.D., EMBA, head of IT strategy for Europe and Russia at Société Générale, posits, “Technology touches every part of our lives, and as a result cyber threats are present in every aspect of our daily lives. We must make cybersecurity education an integral part of our culture, taught and evangelized at all ages. Only through this comprehensive effort will we burn cybersecurity into our DNA and create a true global culture of security.”

Cybercrime Magazine enthusiastically shares this unifying piece with our community. In the spirit of Morozova-Buss’ purpose, we encourage anyone who reads it to share it with your personal network, on social media, and however you might reach more people.
