08 Sep Breaking Into Cybersecurity Without A Technical Degree
This week in cybersecurity from the editors at Cybercrime Magazine
Sausalito, Calif. – Sep. 8, 2025
Cybercrime damages are projected to reach $10.5 trillion USD globally by 2025, according to Cybersecurity Ventures, and organizations need more cybersecurity professionals.
Traditional entry barriers, such as computer science degrees, programming skills and deep technical expertise, continue to exclude a vast pool of talented professionals who could fill these roles, according to Ian Mountford, a CIO contributor and author of The Jobseekers Guide to Careers in Cyber GRC, (Governance, Risk and Compliance), but GRC is the perfect entry point for career changers.
Mountford encourages us to think of cybersecurity as a house. While penetration testers and security engineers focus on building stronger locks and alarm systems, GRC professionals ensure the house has strong foundations, insurance policies, and meets all building regulations.
These roles need little technical depth compared to other cybersecurity positions. Instead, they demand the skills many professionals have developed throughout their careers in other fields.
