In a recent Techopedia interview, security legend Frank Abagnale offers some protection advice to internet and smartphone users.

The tips are topical as cybercrime is expected to be worth $10.5 trillion by 2025, according to Cybersecurity Ventures. “Technology breeds crime. It always has and always will,” Abagnale said in the interview.

AI is going to cause a tsunami of problems because of criminals’ ability to commit all types of crimes and scams,” he added.

“There is no technology, and there never will be any technology, including AI, that can defeat social engineering,” Abagnale said. “You can only defeat social engineering through education. You must teach the individual to recognize when they are being socially engineered.”

Technology can’t eliminate cybercrime, but it can help — and it’s readily available to most smartphone users.

“Today, every device has passkey technology. This will eventually do away with usernames and passwords. This is long overdue,” Abagnale said. Passkeys are available on both iPhone and Android, offering an alternative to unsafe passwords.

Frank Abagnale is one of the world’s most respected authorities on forgery, embezzlement, and secure documents. His riveting story provided the inspiration for Steven Spielberg’s 2002 film, Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Abagnale and Tom Hanks as the FBI agent fast on his heels.
