The size and complexity of the cybercrime problem mean there are tremendous opportunities for professionals interested in developing leadership careers in cybersecurity.

Dallas Business Journal reports that there were 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity jobs globally in 2023, according to research by Cybersecurity Ventures. More than 750,000 of those jobs were in the U.S., and forecasts expect the gap to remain through at least 2025.

The competition for top talent is fierce,” Robert Anderson Jr., chairman and CEO of Dallas-based cybersecurity consultancy Cyber Defense Labs, said. He advises people starting in the field to focus on getting a base level of education and then getting several years of hands-on experience in a specific area.

“You need a good base set of skills, and then you need to get your hands dirty,” Anderson added. “And that doesn’t mean coming in as a manager. It means coming in and just doing the hard work for a couple years. The rest will take care of itself.”

Anderson has extensive cybersecurity experience of his own. He led the FBI’s response to the Sony Pictures breach as the bureau’s No. 3 official. Nearly a decade later, Anderson is still fighting cybercriminals – these days, from the private sector. He retired as the executive assistant director of the FBI’s criminal, cyber, response and services branch at the end of 2015.
