In Dec. 2025, ESPN reported that former University of Michigan co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss, 42, was indicted in Mar. 2025 for allegedly stealing private videos and photos of more than 3,300 student-athletes, mostly women, from over 100 universities across the country.

Federal documents allege that Weiss hacked into the accounts to view and download personal or intimate photographs and videos and took notes commenting on the students’ bodies and sexual preferences.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. It will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Timothy Wyse and Patrick Corbett. The investigation is being conducted by the FBI. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for later this month, and a status hearing and trial date are both set for Sep. 2026.

Dan Wetzel, ESPN journalist and host of the ESPN College GameDay podcast, is an expert in sports scandals and court reporting. He has extensively covered the computer crimes allegedly committed by Weiss, who was also previously an assistant coach with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. Wetzel joined Cybercrime Magazine Podcast host Heather Engel for a deep dive into the University of Michigan scandal, and the vast landscape of online exploitation against teenage athletes, and more.
